Ragoutsaria is the most famous and impressive carnival of Kastoria and is one of the oldest and most special traditions of the city. This celebration, which takes place immediately after New Year’s Day, from January 6 to 8, combines elements of Dionysian rites and Christian customs, bringing alive the folk tradition of the region.
The celebrations begin on Epiphany Day (6 January), and the city is filled with groups of people wearing traditional costumes and masks, many of which are particularly eccentric. Tradition says that the people of Kastoria dressed up in costumes to ward off evil spirits and bring luck and prosperity for the New Year. The groups, known as “bouloukia”, roam the streets of the city, playing music with wind and percussion instruments, dancing and singing traditional songs.
The culmination of the Ragoutsaires takes place on the last day, January 8, with a big parade in the main streets of Kastoria. Participants and visitors dance and have fun with music, feasts and dances that last until late at night, filling the city with liveliness and joy.
Ragoutsaria is an experience that combines tradition, joy and the warm hospitality of Kastoria, attracting many visitors from all over Greece and abroad, who come to experience this unique carnival and live the magic of the region.
